FAQ & Troubleshooting

Find answers to common questions and resolve issues quickly

General

What is PDF remediation?

PDF remediation is the process of making PDF documents accessible to people with disabilities, particularly those using assistive technologies like screen readers. Accessible PDFs include proper tag structure, descriptive alt text for images, correct reading order, language declarations, and accessible tables. RemeDocs automates this process using AI, making it fast and cost-effective compared to manual remediation.

What accessibility standards does RemeDocs support?

RemeDocs ensures your PDFs comply with multiple accessibility standards:

  • WCAG 2.1: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines at Level AA and AAA
  • PDF/UA (ISO 14289): Universal Accessibility standard for PDF documents
  • Section 508: U.S. federal accessibility requirement
  • ADA Title II: Americans with Disabilities Act requirements
  • EN 301 549: European accessibility standard
Who needs PDF remediation?

Organizations required to provide accessible documents include government agencies, educational institutions, financial services, healthcare providers, and any business subject to accessibility laws (ADA, Section 508, AODA, Accessibility Act). Even if not legally required, accessible documents benefit all users, improve SEO, and demonstrate inclusivity.

How does RemeDocs' AI improve my documents?

RemeDocs uses advanced machine learning models trained on millions of documents to:

  • Analyze images: Computer vision technology generates contextually appropriate alt text
  • Identify structure: NLP models recognize headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables
  • Determine reading order: Semantic analysis establishes logical document flow
  • Fix tables: Algorithms correctly associate table headers with cells
  • Detect language: Multi-language support automatically sets document language

You retain full control—all AI suggestions are editable before applying.

Is my data secure with RemeDocs?

Yes. RemeDocs employs enterprise-grade security:

  • SSL/TLS encryption for data in transit
  • AES-256 encryption for data at rest
  • SOC 2 Type II certified infrastructure
  • GDPR and CCPA compliant
  • No PDFs are used for AI training without explicit consent
  • Automatic document deletion after 30 days

Pricing & Plans

Is there a free option?

Yes. RemeDocs offers a free PDF accessibility audit tool that lets you check any document for compliance issues — no account or credit card required. For full remediation, get in touch for a custom quote starting at $100/month.

How does RemeDocs pricing work?

RemeDocs uses flat-rate monthly pricing scoped to your specific PDF backlog and ongoing document volume. Instead of fixed tiers with rigid PDF and page limits, we put together a quote that fits your actual workflow. Engagements start at $100/month and scale from there based on backlog size and monthly volume.

See our pricing page for a full breakdown of how scoping works.

How fast can I get a quote?

Most quotes come back within one business day of a short scoping call. If you're working against a procurement deadline, let us know and we'll prioritize.

Are there per-page fees?

No. Your quote is a flat monthly rate. Page count and document complexity factor into the scoping conversation up front, but you won't see line-item per-page charges or rush surcharges on your invoice.

What about API access?

API access is included in any engagement that needs it — you can upload PDFs programmatically, monitor processing status, retrieve accessibility reports, and download remediated PDFs. Mention API needs during scoping and we'll factor it into your quote.

Can I adjust my engagement as my needs change?

Yes. If your backlog clears faster than expected, your monthly volume grows, or you take on a new compliance initiative, we can re-scope. Just reach out.

Can I try RemeDocs before signing on?

Yes. Use our free PDF accessibility audit tool to see how RemeDocs analyzes your documents — no account needed. When you're ready for full remediation, we'll scope a quote that fits your needs.

Technical

What file types does RemeDocs support?

RemeDocs supports PDF files (.pdf), including:

  • Digital PDFs (created from documents)
  • Scanned PDFs (image-based documents)
  • Password-protected PDFs (must be unlocked before upload)
  • Complex PDFs with forms, images, and multimedia

Other file types (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) should be converted to PDF first.

What is the maximum file size RemeDocs can handle?

RemeDocs supports PDFs up to 100 MB. For most documents, you'll find:

  • Typical document (10-50 pages): <10 MB
  • Large document (100+ pages): 10-50 MB
  • Very large document (500+ pages): 50-100 MB

For files exceeding 100 MB, consider splitting the document or contacting support for enterprise solutions.

How long does remediation take?

Processing time depends on file size and complexity:

  • Small PDFs (1-10 pages): 30 seconds - 2 minutes
  • Medium PDFs (10-100 pages): 2-10 minutes
  • Large PDFs (100-500 pages): 10-30 minutes

Batch processing handles multiple files in parallel, typically 20-30 minutes for 10 documents.

Compliance

What is WCAG 2.1 and why does it matter?

WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is an international standard for digital accessibility maintained by the W3C. It includes three compliance levels:

  • Level A: Basic accessibility (minimum requirement)
  • Level AA: Enhanced accessibility (most common legal requirement)
  • Level AAA: Advanced accessibility (highest standard)

Most organizations aim for Level AA compliance, which RemeDocs helps achieve for PDF documents.

What is PDF/UA and how does it differ from WCAG?

PDF/UA (ISO 14289) is an international standard specifically for PDF accessibility. It ensures PDFs are "universally accessible" to people with disabilities. Key features:

  • Proper tag structure (semantic markup)
  • Logical reading order
  • Descriptive text and alt text
  • Form field labels and instructions
  • Color and contrast accessibility

WCAG is broader (covers all web content), while PDF/UA is PDF-specific. RemeDocs ensures compliance with both standards.

What is Section 508 compliance?

Section 508 is a U.S. federal law requiring government agencies and organizations receiving federal funding to make electronic documents accessible. It includes PDF accessibility standards aligned with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. RemeDocs helps federal agencies meet Section 508 requirements efficiently.

Does RemeDocs ensure ADA Title II compliance?

RemeDocs helps organizations comply with ADA Title II (Americans with Disabilities Act), which requires state and local governments, businesses, and non-profits to provide accessible documents. By remediating PDFs to WCAG 2.1 AA and PDF/UA standards, RemeDocs supports ADA compliance. However, compliance also depends on your organization's broader accessibility practices.

What is EN 301 549 (European accessibility standard)?

EN 301 549 is the European Union standard for digital accessibility, similar to WCAG 2.1 but with EU-specific requirements. It applies to organizations providing digital services in Europe. RemeDocs ensures PDF compliance with EN 301 549 standards, supporting GDPR accessibility requirements.

Will RemeDocs guarantee my PDFs are 100% compliant?

RemeDocs remediates PDFs to meet WCAG 2.1 AA and PDF/UA standards, addressing the vast majority of accessibility issues. However, true compliance depends on:

  • Content accuracy (RemeDocs ensures technical accessibility, not content quality)
  • Accurate alt text for complex images (AI generates good descriptions; you can customize)
  • Proper use of heading hierarchy and structure
  • Color contrast and font readability

We recommend human review of critical documents, especially those with specialized content.

Troubleshooting

My PDF upload failed. What should I do?

Check the following:

  • File size: Ensure your PDF is under 100 MB
  • File format: Confirm the file is a valid PDF (.pdf extension)
  • Password protection: Remove passwords before uploading
  • Corruption: Try opening the file in Adobe Reader; if it fails, the file may be corrupted
  • Browser: Clear your browser cache and try again, or use a different browser
  • Internet connection: Check your connection stability

If issues persist, contact support with the filename and error message.

The accessibility report is not generating. Why?

The report generates automatically after uploading. If you don't see it after 10 minutes:

  • Refresh the page (your browser may not have updated)
  • Check your email—we send a notification when processing completes
  • The PDF may have unreadable content (try a different PDF to test)
  • If the PDF is exceptionally large, processing may take longer

Remediation failed or produced unexpected results. What can I do?

Remediation issues are rare but may occur with complex or unusual PDFs:

  • Re-try: Sometimes a retry succeeds; processing is not always deterministic
  • Review and edit: The report shows all changes before you apply them; you can skip or customize any
  • Manual adjustment: After downloading, you can further edit the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Contact support: Send the original PDF to support@remedocs.com for assistance
Can I edit the remediated PDF after downloading?

Yes! RemeDocs provides you with a fully editable PDF. You can:

  • Edit in Adobe Acrobat Pro (recommended for advanced edits)
  • Edit in free tools like PDFtk or PDF-XChange Editor
  • Make minor text or alt text changes before distributing

RemeDocs preserves the original PDF structure, so you can enhance or adjust the remediation without starting over.

What if RemeDocs can't remediate my PDF?

While RemeDocs handles 99%+ of PDFs successfully, some edge cases may require manual remediation. Examples:

  • Heavily OCR'd scanned documents with poor text recognition
  • PDFs with embedded non-standard fonts
  • Encrypted or copy-protected PDFs
  • PDFs with complex layered graphics or specialized scientific notation

For these cases, we recommend consulting a professional PDF accessibility specialist or reaching out to support@remedocs.com for guidance.

How do I recover a PDF I accidentally deleted?

RemeDocs stores your original PDFs for 30 days. To recover:

  • Log into your dashboard
  • Look for a "Deleted Documents" section (if available on your plan)
  • Select the document and click "Restore"
  • If deleted more than 30 days ago, contact support@remedocs.com (recovery may not be possible)
I'm experiencing slow performance or timeouts.

Try these steps:

  • Check your internet connection speed
  • Close other browser tabs to free up memory
  • Clear your browser cache (Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data)
  • Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • Disable browser extensions that might interfere (ad blockers, VPNs)
  • If using a VPN, try disabling it temporarily

If the issue persists, it may be related to your internet service. Email support@remedocs.com with your account details.
